Why height is the decision that makes or breaks the room

Most people buy an artificial tree by colour and price, then wonder why it looks lost in the corner. Scale is what separates "there's a fake plant over there" from a room that looks finished. The rule of thumb interior designers use: leave roughly 8–12 inches (20–30 cm) of air between the top of the tree and the ceiling. Closer than that and it looks squeezed; much more and a tall tree starts to look like a small tree in a big room.

Measure where the tree will actually stand, not the middle of the room. Corners often have crown moulding, and a spot under a sloping ceiling or a wall light needs more clearance than you think.

2. The planter you'll drop it into

How tall should an artificial tree be next to a sofa?

Aim for the top of the foliage to land somewhere between the sofa back and about a foot above it. In a standard room that usually means a 5–6 ft tree.

Can I use a 7ft tree in a room with an 8ft ceiling?
